BDC Partners with Fellow Young Leaders of MEDA to Volunteer at The Maryland Food Bank.

The USDA defines “food insecurity” as the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe foods or limited or uncertain ability to acquire acceptable foods in socially acceptable ways. We define it as an unacceptable situation where individuals or households do not have the resources to provide enough food to allow for a healthy and active lifestyle.

One in 3 Marylanders faces food insecurity. Looking at Maryland Food Bank’s Hunger Map, Cecil County is one of the larger impacted counties when it comes to facing hunger. Executive Director Toni Sprenkle and Executive Assistant Jen Peterson want to do their part to ensure that no person in our wonderful state faces uncertainty when it comes to food or feeding their families. Our BDC team was honored to serve for an afternoon alongside of other MEDA Young Leaders to assist the Maryland Food Bank keep their shelves stocked for families that depend on them.

BDC Hosts the Port of Deposit Historical Park Meeting at the Historic Tome School Campus on a Beautiful Snowy January Morning

BDC hosted members of DNR, Maryland Historical Trust, Lower Susquehanna Heritage Greenway, Department of Commerce, Town of Port Deposit, and local and state agencies for a meeting to discuss the plans for the Tome Campus. The Port of Deposit Historical Park committee meets monthly to work on the conversion of the campus into a state park. Plans for the land to transfer to DNR are set to take place in 2025, setting the property up for public access once infrastructure and stabilization upgrades are completed and the park officially opens. BDC is partnering with DNR on this project and will keep posting updates as they are public and available.

BDC attends Port Deposit Mural Dedication Ceremony

BDC had the wonderful opportunity to assist local artist Jessica Kehl in bringing a truly magnificent mural to life. Executive Director Toni Sprenkle attended the mural dedication ceremony Saturday, August 19th and added her hand print to the wall.

Attempting to put into words what this mural project has done for the community of Port Deposit is difficult. Volunteering with brush in hand is really the only way to fully capture the transformation of both the mural wall and strangers that became friends; standing next to one another for a few hours sharing a common goal. Neighbors, local government leaders, community and business leaders all uniting together with a solo cup of paint forging friendships, and creating art.

BDC takes great care in being available to our community and truly meeting folks where they are to strengthen our small town. We look forward to the partnerships we’ve created in Port Deposit to help with future projects that will positivity impact our town.

BDC meets CCU

Toni and Jen were able to meet Erica Berge from Community Connecting Us, a non profit asset based community development organization in Port Deposit. CCU is quickly becoming an integral part of the town providing citizens with a place to share their resources and skills with others. They strive to provide opportunities for community members of any age or need to build relationships and promote education, wellness, creativity and a sense of community. Their facility is located in the Historic Tome Memorial Complex with their main center in Nesbitt Hall. Toni and Jen were thrilled to get a first hand tour from Erica and Ms. Barb. The ties to the Historic Tome School are exciting for BDC, as the stewards of the Tome Campus just up the hill. We were amazed at the history, beauty and charm of the buildings but absolutely astounded by the passion the Erica exudes for helping every member of the community find success,

a sense of well-being and belonging. Her dedication to ensuring the community center is accessible and available to anyone is nothing short of admirable and BDC looks forward to a partnership to make sure that CCU continues to grow to meet the needs of our changing small town.
